You may assume that it’s a sport sorely for people with disabilities but that’s not the case. Blind football is a five-aside game where players are blindfolded with the goalkeeper sighted and acting as a guide to players.
The sport has seen recent interest and rise in the last couple of months and Sports Guru Robert Langa revealed to Capital Sport that plans are being put in place to host a blind football tournament later this year. Langa revealed the importance of the sport in accommodating blind people and bringing everyone together.
” The aim is to accommodate youth that can’t see and make them feel loved and as part of the nation”. ” The interesting part about the game is that only the goalkeeper can see the ball making the game fun”. The plan is to host the tournament in September on Heritage Day with preparations already underway. Langa’s wish for the tournament is to have people living with blindness and those who can see be a part of the sport on the day.
“We are currently in communication with a few people, coaches, and special schools as we would love for the tournament to consist of people who were born with blindness and those who can see”. Blind football is a growing sport that could get better with time and more investment in it.
