The newly formed SMU Male Netball team made its debut in the Tshwane Netball League this past weekend at TUKS sports centre. The debutants were treated to some fierce competition winning one and narrowly losing one of their two games. Despite the results, the debutants exited the court with heads high.
Team Manager Mpho Nkuna was pleased with the performances of the team pointing out several positives. Having watched the team develop over the past few weeks, Nkuna hailed the team for its brave performance.
“ We were impressed with the performance of the team, when we compared our performance from the first match to the recent matches we noticed improvements. This made us realise how much potential we have and how capable we are of doing better”.
Following their first win in their debut game, the debutants were up for it in their second game against Glamorous. It was a tightly contested game that could have gone either side or in the end, SMU fell short of a second win losing 27-24 to Glamorous.
With a performance that showed great hunger and determination, Nkuna believes there’s more to what they gave and assures improvement from the team. He further acknowledged that more work needs to be done to keep up with the intensity of the league.
“ As new as we are, we know what we need to do to keep up with the intensity of the Netball League with the help of our coaches. Fitness, basic netball, and more game time will help us bear in mind that not everything will go according to plan as we always have Plan B and Plan C put in place “.
Competing with a fairly young squad, the team’s goal is to expose young players to the world of Male Netball so that they can acquire as much experience in order to perform better. The Team will look to redeem themselves from the first week’s loss in their fixtures.
